Your customer's path often starts on YouTube, Reddit, or AI chat — not Google. If you only optimize step five, you miss the conversations that shape the decision.
Part of our AI Search series. If you landed here first, start with the pillar for the full company-wide framing.
When was the last time you Googled something and found the answer on the first try — for a broad question, not a specific URL? Restaurant picks come from Maps or Instagram. Product reviews from Reddit or YouTube. 'Does this actually work?' from TikTok or a creator you trust.
Your customers changed how they search. Nobody announced it. Marketing dashboards still worship rank on step five.
Young illustrated a typical website-builder journey: YouTube ('can I make money from a site?'), Reddit ('best builder — real opinions'), social ('watch someone set it up'), AI chat ('compare options'), then Google ('pricing 2026').
Typical discovery journey
By step five, the decision is largely made. Branded search and pricing queries confirm intent — they do not create it.
Even when customers reach Google, SparkToro data (cited in the talk) shows a rising share of searches ending without a click. AI Overviews answer before your page loads. Rankings can hold while traffic falls — the Hostinger pattern.
Zero-click and generational shift
Adobe research in the talk noted 65% of Gen Z using TikTok as a primary search engine and 55% of millennials using it for decision-making information. This is not a demographic you can wait out.
Young warned about a dangerous pattern: non-branded organic trending down over 18 months while paid holds revenue flat. AI search may be the unnamed gap — not in weekly reports, happening in background research on Reddit and in chat windows.
Rank is one signal on one platform at one moment. Discovery health needs a wider dashboard:
