Installing GA4 directly and installing it through Google Tag Manager produce different long-term outcomes — here's the setup order that avoids the most common configuration mistakes.
GA4 can be installed as a direct script tag on every page, or delivered through Google Tag Manager as a container. Both get the tracking code onto the page. Only one of them makes the next tracking tool an easy addition instead of another manual code change.
A data layer is the structured information a page exposes for GTM to read — product IDs, form names, cart values. Skipping this step and reverse-engineering tracking from whatever the theme or CMS happens to expose is how most implementations end up fragile and incomplete.
