BrightLocal's 2026 survey shows the biggest one-year shift in review-reading behavior on record — and a rising star-rating bar that's already filtering businesses out before they get a call.
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 puts a number on something most service businesses already sense: customers check reviews before they call, and they're checking harder than they used to. 97% of consumers read reviews when researching a local business, and the share who say they "always" read reviews jumped from 29% to 41% year over year — the single biggest swing in the survey's history.

The threshold customers use to rule a business out has moved up fast. 31% of consumers will now only consider a business rated 4.5 stars or higher — up 14 points from 17% the prior year. 68% require at least 4 stars, up from 55%. A business sitting at 3.8 stars isn't just losing the comparison against a 4.6 — for a growing share of customers, it's not making the shortlist at all.
The most striking shift in the 2026 survey isn't about stars — it's about where people are looking in the first place. The share of consumers using AI tools (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and similar) to find local businesses jumped from 6% to 45% year over year, making AI the third-largest discovery channel, ahead of Yelp and Tripadvisor and behind only Google and Facebook. Google's own share of discovery fell from 83% to 71% over the same period — still dominant, but no longer close to the whole picture.
